One of the commonest arguments in Indian cricket circles in the 1970s used to be around who was the greatest Indian batter of all time. Sunil Gavaskar had the numbers (and would have many a world record by the 1980s), but Gundappa Viswanath was considered more aesthetically pleasing. Old-timers continue to have many a fight over a teacup even today.

However, there was no animosity between the two little masters: Viswanath married his friend Gavaskar’s sister Kavita. While hailing his brother-in-law as the superior batter, Gavaskar rarely forgets to remind that he is half an inch taller (“when we both sat on a sofa, my feet would touch the ground, his would be half an inch above”).
