In 1889, the Wisden Almanack listed the “Six Great Bowlers of the Year”, accompanied by profiles and photographs. The idea became popular, so they listed “Nine Great Batsmen” in 1890 and “Six Great Wicket-Keepers” in 1891. Subsequently (with the odd exception), Wisden has honoured five cricketers every summer.

One of the oldest honours in cricket (and indeed, in any sport), the Wisden Cricketers of the Year is often well-anticipated and celebrated. When a young Geoff Boycott was named in 1965, he wrote “a respectful letter” to editor Norman Preston. Larry Gomes, for whom being a Cricketer of the Year as a “goal”, was “delighted beyond words” when he achieved that in 1985.
