Minimum requirement for Sri Lanka’s qualification
As is evident, the most Sri Lanka can secure is two points – something three other teams already have. Thus, for Sri Lanka to qualify, two necessary conditions need to be satisfied. One, Sri Lanka have to beat India. And two, at most one other team can score more than two points.
Can this actually happen? If Sri Lanka win their last game (against India), they will reach two points – but that will mean all four teams will be on two points based on four games.
The other two games are Bangladesh’s matches, against India and Pakistan. As we mentioned in above, for Sri Lanka to qualify, only one team can finish on more than two. Since Bangladesh are playing both games, they are the only ones Sri Lanka can “afford to” let score from those games.
Let us, thus, fine-tune the necessary conditions. For Sri Lanka to qualify, Bangladesh have to win both their games and Sri Lanka have to beat India. That will result in Bangladesh finishing on six points and the other three teams on two apiece.
Of course, now Sri Lanka have to overtake both India and Pakistan in net run rate.
