Marnus Labuschagne scores rapid ton in Dean Jones Trophy

Labuschagne stepped out to bat at 7-1 in the third over at the Allan Border Field after Victoria captain Will Sutherland won the toss and elected to field. He took 60 balls for his first half-century but only 32 for his second. By the time he fell for a 118-ball 130 (17 fours, one six), Queensland had raced to 251 in the 45th over.

Late blows from Jack Wildermuth (54 in 30 balls, two fours, four sixes) then helped Queensland post 310-5. For the tourists, Sutherland finished with 2-60.

This was Labuschagne’s fourth List A hundred. The first of the four, 135 for Queensland against South Australia in 2019/20, remains his career-best, while the other two – 108 in 2019/20 and 124 in 2023/24 – came in ODIs against South Africa. This was also his first hundred in all professional cricket since the 119 for Glamorgan against Gloucestershire in the County Championship in June 2024.

Labuschagne was the top-ranked Test batter not too long ago, but a string of low scores resulted in him being left out of Australia’s tour of the West Indies. He did play the ODIs against South Africa in end-August, but made only two runs in two innings. However, he has found some form in club cricket.

In the Dean Jones Trophy match, Michael Neser (3-43) reduced Victoria to 16-3. Peter Handscomb (55 in 73 balls, eight fours) led a rearguard act, but Wildermuth (3-46) struck, and Victoria found themselves at 164-7.

At this point, Glenn Maxwell (107 in 82 balls, eight fours, seven sixes) launched a furious onslaught, but the most he could do was to stretch Victoria’s total to 255. Tom Straker (2-46) finished things off in the 47th over.

Labuschagne was named the Player of the Match for a performance that is likely to boost his chances of a national recall.
