Bangladesh registered their maiden Test victory on Australian soil in just their third Test down under.
Bangladesh, who were bundled out for a mere 54 in the second innings of the tour match at the same venue, came back with a vengeance to go 1-0 up in the two match series.
Australia managed 198 on the back of Steve Smith’s 71, after electing to bat first. Hasan Mahmud claimed 6-55, the best figures for Bangladesh against Australia, while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain chipped in with two wickets apiece.
However, the question was always if the visitors could stand up to the Australian quartet, who took the field together for the first time in 13 months. They did. Bangladesh registered 426 in their first innings, thanks to a Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s hundred and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 84. Josh Hazlewood claimed 6-89, bagging his 300th Test wicket on the way.
Trailing by 228, Australia could avoid the innings defeat but could only leave Bangladesh with to chase. Cameron Green scored his third Test ton, eventually falling to a delivery that stayed low from Hasan Mahmud. The visitors chased the total with nine wickets to spare.

Bangladesh have now won three of their five Tests, and strengthened their position at the fourth spot with a PCT jump from 58.33 to 66.67, just behind New Zealand’s 72.22.
On the other hand, the hosts, who were sitting comfortably with an 87.5 PCT have now slipped down to 77.78 after their loss in the first Test, just a touch above South Africa’s 75. The second Test between Australia and Bangladesh will commence from August 22.
To add to that, India and Sri Lanka, who currently sit on the fifth and sixth spots, are currently in the middle of the first Test of their two-match series.
