Haseeb Hameed of Nottinghamshire celebrates his double century on day three of the Rothesay County Championship match between Nottinghamshire and Somerset at Trent Bridge on July 31, 2025 in Nottingham, England

Out-of-favour England opener Haseeb Hameed struck his second double century of his prolific 2025 County Championship season during Nottinghamshire’s clash against Somerset at Trent Bridge.

Replying to Somerset’s 438 in the first innings, Nottinghamshire’s innings was spearheaded by their skipper Hameed. He brought up his fifty off 87 deliveries, but after moving from 92 to 98 with a six off Archie Vaughan, faced an agonising 13-ball wait for his 18th first-class century, including nine tense deliveries stuck on 99.

Resuming his innings on day three, Hameed batted with patience and precision to convert his overnight score into a double century. He eventually fell victim to a Tom Lammonby run-out that ended his marathon knock at 208 runs off 388 deliveries. His innings was decorated with 23 fours and two sixes. By the time of his dismissal, Nottinghamshire had already marched to 406-5, in touching distance of Somerset's first-innings total.

Hameed made his Test debut for England at just 19 during a challenging tour of India, impressing with 257 runs at 42.83. However, he waited five years for his next Test appearance, and poor form compounded by an Ashes struggle (80 runs at 10.00 across eight innings) ultimately led to his second omission from the side.

The 28-year-old has recorded his fourth 1,000-run County Championship season – and his second consecutive one – having also amassed 1,091 runs at 51.95 in 2024. Notably, two of his three career double-centuries have come this season, including an unbeaten 206 against Durham in May. His highest score of 247 not out came against Lancashire last year.

He currently leads the run-scoring charts across both divisions of the County Championship, having amassed 1,108 runs at an impressive average of 79.14. This marks his highest-ever average in a first-class season, surpassing his previous best of 58.80 during his 1,235-run campaign in 2022.

Notts are in the County Championship title hunt, leading Division One coming into the current round of fixtures. Going into the fourth day leading by 71, they will look to extend their advantage before attempting to bowl Somerset out.
