Mason Crane

Less than a fortnight after decimating Kent 2nd XI, Glamorgan’s Mason Crane ran through Lancashire to return career-best figures.

With 5-22 and 6-66, Crane had spun Glamorgan 2nd XI to a 74-run triumph over Kent 2nd XI at Abergavenny. Six days later, he played for the first XI against Lancashire in a County Championship match at Old Trafford.

Asa Tribe (61) and Kiran Carlson (77) helped Glamorgan post 261 after captain Sam Northeast won the toss and opted to bat. Crane made nine runs from No.8. Chris Green continued with his golden run, snaring 6-82, while Tom Bailey got 2-57. Home captain James Anderson picked up 1-34.

In response, the hosts recovered from an early blow by Asitha Fernando (3-26) to reach 49-1 and then 107-3 when Crane claimed five wickets for 12 runs in 41 balls.

Mason Crane takes career-best 6-19 against Lancashire

He had Marcus Harris caught off a full-toss at mid-on, Phil Salt caught behind, and Matty Hurst top-edging a sweep. He then caught Green off his own bowling and trapped Tom Hartley leg-before, leaving Lancashire reeling at 132-8 at tea.

Fernando returned after tea to trap Bailey leg-before before Crane had George Balderson caught at mid-wicket to finish with 6-19, his first six-wicket haul in first-class cricket. His previous best of 5-35 came for Hampshire against Warwickshire, back in 2015, before he had played his only Test match (at Sydney in 2017/18).

Perhaps miffed by the damage done to his team, Anderson rose to the challenge on his 43rd birthday, taking out the Glamorgan openers with 24 on the board. At stumps, however, the visitors were 95-2, with Northeast on 26 and Carlson on 43. They have stretched the lead to 219 runs.
