Rahul Chahar, who was signed for Surrey’s final County Championship match of the season against Hampshire, dismissed his Indian counterpart Washington Sundar in both innings at Southampton today (September 26).
Sundar gets Chahar first… and it continues
Batting first, Surrey managed 147 in their first innings, with Sundar picking up three wickets in just 3.2 overs. He dismissed Matthew Fisher and Ollie Sykes before claiming Chahar's wicket to finish off the innings.
In turn, the leg-spinner sent down 20.4 overs in Hampshire’s first innings, more than any other Surrey bowler. He also gave away only 67 runs, and got his first reward when he claimed James Fuller’s wicket for 21 runs. The last wicket to fall for Hampshire was Sundar, who was the only batter to put up resistance, scoring 56. No one else from his side crossed 35, with Chahar bringing an end to the innings at 248 with Sundar’s wicket. Hampshire managed a 101-run first-innings lead.
Surrey’s second innings saw them make 281, with Ralphie Albert top scoring (63 off 90). Chahar, batting at No.10, contributed 10 and was dismissed by Fuller. Sundar went wicketless, as Surrey set Hampshire a target of 181 to win and avoid relegation.
It was a Chahar show thereafter. Playing his debut Championship match, Chahar dismissed opener Fletcha Middleton for 18, before returning to send back Toby Albert. Dan Lawrence picked up two of the first four wickets to fall, as Hampshire fell to 94-4. Chahar was the only bowler to contribute to the wickets column for the rest of the day: He ended day three with 7-45 in 20 overs, including dismissing Sundar once again, for 11. It was his eighth first-class five-for, and he has already registered his career-best figures.
Hampshire were 148-9, still needing 33 runs for a win, before stumps were called. Chahar will be in with a chance to pick up his first ten-for on Saturday.
