The Allison brothers dismissed each other in a County Championship 2025 match between Worcestershire and Essex at New Road.
Worcestershire were bowled out for 358 after Essex captain Tom Westley won the toss and opted to field. The hosts seemed in trouble at 123-5 and then at 193-7, but Matthew Waite hit a 91-ball 73 from No.8. Waite added 95 with Tom Taylor for the eighth wicket and another 47 for the ninth, with Ben Allison.
Ben Allison was last dismissed, for 38. His younger brother Charlie caught him off Shane Snater, who finished with 4-78. But Ben Allison (and Worcestershire) went a step ahead. With the second ball of his over, the second of the Essex innings, Ben clean bowled Charlie Allison for a duck. He finished with 3-23 and Waite with 3-34 as Essex folded for 157. Robin Das (44) was the only Essex batter to go past 20.
Despite the massive lead, Worcestershire did not enforce the follow-on. Instead, they were bowled out for 134. Ben Allison fell for a duck this time, leg-before to Simon Harmer.
Both brothers have played for the England Under-19s. Charlie, in particular, came to news in 2023, when a video of him batting at the age of six went viral. Last year, Ben Allison moved from Essex to Worcestershire on a three-year contract.
Have brothers dismissed each other in a first-class match before?
There have been multiple instances of this, but one from Grace Road in 2019 deserves special mention. Lancashire leg-spinner Matt Parkinson trapped his brother Callum, of Leicestershire, leg-before. Callum got back soon – lbw, of course. What makes the pair stand out is they are identical twins.
Also worth a mention is a 1933 game at Lord’s, where Jack Lee of Somerset dismissed his brother Harry, who was playing for Middlesex. The catch – literally – was held by Frank, a third brother. However, there was no “revenge” this time.
