Pakistan seamer takes six-for in new side's County Championship title push

Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas claimed a six-wicket haul for his new County Championship side, Nottinghamshire, in their latest match against Yorkshire.

At Headingley, Nottinghamshire scored 228 in the first innings. Apart from Ben Slater (52) and Joe Clarke (64), no other batter managed an innings of note. Seam bowler George Hill was the wrecker-in-chief for Yorkshire, picking up 5-40.

Abbas wreaked havoc in response though, removing both of the hosts’ openers – Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean – for just two runs each, giving the visitors a dream start in their defense. Brett Hutton and Dillon Pennington then struck further blows, each claiming two wickets to reduce Yorkshire to 104-6.

Abbas then returned to clean up the tail, taking the last four wickets. He dismissed opposition captain Dom Bess (11) and Jordan Thompson (0) off successive deliveries to put himself on a hat-trick, securing his second five-wicket haul for his new side in just three matches. He finished with figures of 6-45 as Yorkshire were skittled out for 159.

Mohammad Abbas keeps dominating county cricket

Abbas’ six-wicket haul took his tally to 15 wickets at an average of 16.60 this season. Only Hill has taken more wickets at a better average (14.59) this season.

Abbas, who played the last four seasons for Hampshire, has signed a six-match deal with Nottinghamshire following Fergus O’Neill’s departure. This is not the first time he has landed up a deal with Nottinghamshire. In 2020, he was supposed to play for the county side, but the deal didn’t come to fruition because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abbas, since then, represented Hampshire in four seasons, taking 180 wickets at an average of 19.07. Thanks largely to his county cricket exploits, Abbas made a comeback to the Pakistan Test team during their South Africa tour in December-January.
