Mayank Agarwal scored his first century for Durham, his 22nd first-class ton, and put the Division Two champions on top against Worcestershire by end of play on Day 1.
Mayank Agarwal hits 22nd first-class ton, and first for Durham
Agarwal slammed 177 off 220 deliveries, hitting 31 fours and one six, as division two champions Durham amassed 437 for the loss of seven wickets batting first. The opening pair of Alex Lees and Ben McKinney had given them a steady start by adding 56 for the first wicket, but Durham lost three quick wickets in a space of 18 runs.
Agarwal walked out at four and joined hands with former England captain Ben Stokes upon McKinney's departure. The duo asserted their authority and put Durham in command with a 105-run stand for the fourth wicket in just 93 balls. Stokes fell for a 40-ball 50.
The former India Test opener completed his half-century off exactly 50 deliveries, and maintained the scoring rate even after Stokes' dismissal. He brought up his maiden ton for the county off 121 balls with his 19th boundary of the innings, and only built on it from then on, leaving Worcs clueless at Chester-le-Street.
After a century stand with Stokes, he added 71 runs with Colin Ackermann and then another 149 runs with Ollie Robinson, who remains unbeaten on 78. But just when he looked set for a double ton, Agarwal edged one behind off Tom Taylor on 177, with the team just one short of the 400-run mark.

This was Agarwal's best score in the County Championship, surpassing his previous highest score of 175, which, coincidentally, came for Yorkshire against Durham in division one almost a year ago, ultimately leading to the latter's relegation.
Agarwal, who last played for India in 2022, had managed socres of 36, 48, 0 and 21 from his first four innings of the ongoing season.
