Playing against Yorkshire, Kyle Abbott took the first ten-wicket haul across the two divisions of the 2026 County Championship.
Kyle Abbott takes ten to rout Yorkshire
Abbott had taken 4-49 in 20 overs the first innings at Headingley to first reduce Yorkshire to 37-4, then bowl them out for 177. That helped Hampshire secure a 74-run first-innings lead.
Jake Lehmann (92) and captain Ben Brown (103 not out) then added 172 for the fourth wicket in just 181 balls before Brown declared on 351-5. Chasing 426, Yorkshire became 65-5 by stumps on day two: Abbott had taken four of the wickets.
On the third morning, Abbott trapped Fin Bean leg-before in the second over of the morning to complete his 47th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. At the other end, Sonny Baker, who had a triple-wicket maiden en route his 4-45 in the first innings, then bounced out Harry Duke to leave Yorkshire reeling at 97-7.
George Hill (52) and home captain Dom Bess (49) then put on 78, but Abbott then trapped the former to break the stand and take his seventh 10-wicket haul – the first across the two divisions in the 2026 County Championship.
Of Abbott’s 720 first-class wickets, 490 have been for Hampshire, at 19.81 apiece. Of bowlers who debuted for the county since the two-division split began (leading to fewer games), he is set to become the first to take 500 wickets for the county.
Liam Dawson soon rounded things up for Hampshire as Yorkshire were bowled out for 211. With 22 points from two games, hare now sixth in the ten-team Division 1, while Yorkshire (13 from two) are at the bottom.
