Nathan McSweeney continued his purple patch in the County Championship with a responsible knock of 109 for Northamptonshire against Kent.
Kent were bowled for 345 in their first innings, and Northants openers Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter remained unbeaten at stumps on the second day with 74 runs on the board. But after day three was completely washed out, and with an outright victory out of reach, the hosts batted for bonus points at the County Ground in Northampton.
Walking out to bat at four, McSweeney constructed an 83-run partnership with Vasconcelos, who also scored his fifth hundred of the season. After the latter's dismissal, the Australia batter then registered a 124-run stand with Saif Zaib, who scored 72, before completing his fourth ton of the season. He was ultimately trapped lbw by Keith Dudgeon for 109, while Northamptonshire finished at 450-6 as the game ended in a draw.
Four points separated the two teams before the clash, but with Kent bagging 12 (two bonus points each for batting and bowling, plus eight for the draw) and Northamptonshire taking 16 (three for bowling, five for batting and eight for draw), they both now have 151 points each. Kent, however, are placed second for having registered more wins so far - five compared to Northant' four. Durham are the clear favourites to progress to Division One, having amassed 191 points from 10 matches.

Can Australia McSweeney their way to Ashes 2027?
In what is his debut County Championship season, McSweeney has scored 747 runs in 10 games at 49.80 - the second-most for Northamptonshire and only behind Vasconcelos (804 in 10 matches at 50.25).
With Australia slowly building their way to Ashes 2027 in England, the opening spot could be up for grabs. Since David Warner’s retirement in January 2024, Australia have experimented with a string of openers alongside Travis Head, the latest of whom were Jake Weatherald and Matt Renshaw in the home series against Bangladesh.
However, with consistent runs on English soil, McSweeney has staked his claim for a return to the Test side. He has so far played three Tests for Australia, all coming in 2024 against India, but scored only 72 runs in six innings.
