Northamptonshire had bad light to blame as they missed the opportunity to get back in the promotion zone with a win over Derbyshire at the County Ground in Northampton.

The umpires stopped play due to bad light on the final day with Northants just 23 runs away from a win at 326-6. Play didn’t restart, and the match eventually finished in a draw, keeping them four points off second-placed Kent in the division two table. A win would have seen them leapfrog Kent into the second spot going into the final round.
Chasing 349, Northants started the final day at 37 without loss, and the opening pair of Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter added 115 more before the latter fell for 51 off 141. Vasconcelos held one end even as three quick wickets fell after lunch.
He then found an able partner in Calvin Harrison, who hit a 69-ball 50, with the duo adding 78 runs for the fourth wicket. Vasconcelos went on to complete his sixth hundred of the championship season, but the duo fell in quick succession after tea, with Vascencelos’s dismissal for 132 off 232 leaving Northants at 268-5, needing only 81 more to seal the win.
George Bartlett took the team even closer to a victory and was batting at 24 off 22 when umpires stopped play due to bad light, with 23 more needed in 22.2 overs. The match was declared a draw.

Earlier in the game, Derbyshire rode on captain Wayne Madsen and Ben Aitchinson’s centuries to post 372 batting first. Vasconceos and Procter scored respective half-centuries, and so did Lewis McManus, but the Northants conceded a 62-run first-innings lead. Their opening pair notably took more than 40 overs to add 97 together in the first innings, which eventually came back to bite them in a crucial encounter.

Northants will face Middlesex at Lord's in their final County Championship game of the season.
