Leicestershire kept their faint hopes of staying in Division One alive by chasing down 334 to beat Hampshire by five wickets at Grace Road. The defeat confirmed Hampshire's relegation to Division Two for the first time since their promotion in 2014.
Leicestershire barely stay afloat in survival race
It was a nervy chase for the hosts, who were 170-4 after 54 overs, needing another 164 runs for victory. However, Nick Kelly and Ben Cox put Leicestershire in control with a 158-run partnership for the fifth wicket, with the former making 86. He fell late in the chase, while Cox finished unbeaten on 75, hitting the winning boundary.
The day began with Hampshire's Kyle Abbott removing Hamza Shaikh, but Kelly and Cox settled quickly to all but take the game away. Leicestershire, who had taken a slender 30-run lead in the first innings after making 244, eventually reached the target in 91 overs.
The result comes only days after Leicestershire were deducted 27 points for preparing a sub-standard pitch during their home win over Glamorgan. The punishment is still subject to appeal, but the deduction has left them facing a difficult battle to remain in Division One.
Leicestershire have been docked all 19 points they earned for their win over Glamorgan at Grace Road after the pitch was deemed “poor”.

They have also been handed an additional eight-point penalty and fined £5,000.

If the ninth-placed Leicestershire want to avoid relegation, they now need to beat league-leaders Warwickshire at Edgbaston in their last match. They must also overhaul eighth-placed Essex, who are currently 19 points clear of them in the table.
Hampshire, meanwhile, will play fifth-placed Sussex in their final game, but the result will not prevent relegation. It ends their 11-year stay in Division One since winning promotion in 2014.
