Joe Root misses his 56th first-class hundred...
At Headingley, Sussex had amassed 502 after Jonny Bairstow had won the toss and opted to field. John Simpson had top-scored with 136, while Tom Price had made 93 and Tom Haines 64. For the hosts, Jack White returned 4-60 and George Hill 3-86.
Yorkshire responded with a 195-run second-wicket stand between Finlay Bean (105) and Sam Whiteman (101). Emerging at 199-2, Root – playing his first match of the 2026 County Championship – soon saw his team slip to 267-4. However, he stayed put, scoring at a rapid pace before Henry Crocombe had him caught-behind just short of a hundred. His 96, scored off 127 balls, included 12 fours.
The tail then pushed Yorkshire to 511. For Sussex, Crocombe finished with 3-107 and Tom Clark with 3-138. At stumps on day three, Sussex were 31-2: they lead by 22 runs.
... and Ben Duckett his 31st
At Trent Bridge, captain Ed Barnard’s 165 lifted Warwickshire from 179-6 to 459 even as Josh Tongue snared 5-124 and Lyndon James 3-79. A salient feature of the innings was the 119-run ninth-wicket stand between Chris Woakes (64) and Michael Booth (70).
Joe Clarke made 94 in response, but it was not enough as Woakes (3-44) and Booth (4-71) bowled out Nottinghamshire for 279, and Barnard enforced the follow-on.
In the second innings, Duckett came to bat after captain home captain Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater put on 118 for the opening stand. Duckett dominated the 150-run second wicket stand before Beau Webster had him out caught for a 120-ball 93 (14 fours, one six). Hameed (115) followed soon afterwards, and Notts ended the day on 310-4. They lead by 130 runs.
