Josh Tongue and Olly Stone together added 74 runs for the last wicket in Nottinghamshire’s County Championship match against Surrey, but fell short of breaking a 127-year-old club record.

Tongue and Stone fall 10 short of record Nottinghamshire partnership against Surrey

Surrey bowled first after winning the toss at Trent Bridge and were provided a great start by Daniel Worrall, who dismissed both of Nottinghamshire’s openers. Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke joined hands to stabilise the innings, adding 87 runs together before the England Test opener became Worrall’s third wicket.

Clarke went on to complete a 27th first-class ton, while Jack Haynes provided able support to score 82 as the duo stitched a crucial 146-run stand for the fourth wicket. Worrall once again stood up for Surrey, dismissing Haynes and Kyle Verreynne in the same over to complete his five-for. Sean Abbott soon got the better of Lyndon James and Liam Patterson-White within three deliveries to send Nottinghamshire from 251-3 to 256-7.

No.9 Fergus O'Neill and Clarke finished day one unbeaten, having added 61 runs for the eighth wicket, but the skipper fell in the second over of the second day. O'Neill’s departure brought Stone and Tongue together in the middle, who added 74 runs for the last wicket to take Nottinghamshire to 415. Worrall dismissed Stone to break the partnership and finish with figures of 6-73.

The two England fast bowlers fell just 10 runs short of what would have been Nottinghamshire’s highest last-wicket partnership against Surrey. Wilfred Payton and Thomas Wass hold the record, having added an unbeaten 84 runs for the last wicket against Surrey at Trent Bridge in the 1909 Championship season.

Stone, fresh off a five-wicket haul against Leicestershire in the last Championship round, picked up the first wicket for Nottinghamshire, having Surrey captain Rory Burns caught and bowled in his third over of the innings.
