Ajaz Patel outsmarted Dom Sibley with a barrage of deliveries on the legs during Leicestershire’s County Championship draw with Surrey.
Ajaz Patel outsmarts Dom Sibley before getting Jamie Smith and Dan Lawrence in an over
Ajaz employed an extreme leg-side plan, bowling consistently on the opener’s legs and even conceding four consecutive wides before finally getting the dismissal. The left-arm spinner ran through Sibley’s patience, who ultimately played one straight into leg slip Stephen Eskinazi’s hands.
Sibley batter fell for 32 after a 105-run stand with Jamie Smith, who scored an 89 following back-to-back centuries. He had lost his opening partner Rory Burns in the first over as Ian Holland ran through his defence.
Ajaz went on to dismiss Smith and Dan Lawrence in one over later on in the innings. While Smith holed out to Tom Scriven in the deep when attempting a sweep, Lawrence tried to play one off his pads, only for the ball to miss them and hit his off stump instead.
Ajaz, who finished with figures of 3-92, had employed a leg-side plan on first-innings centurion Ollie Pope as well, but the latter was dropped on his second ball.
Pope remained unbeaten on 83 as Surrey declared at 263-4 and the match finished in a draw, with Leicestershire taking 15 points home from the Oval, while Surrey managed 14.
The home side had batted first after being put into bat, and riding on hundreds from Pope and Smith, and a 63 from Ben Foakes, posted 520. The Foxes replied with a hefty 691, Rishi Patel, Eskinazi and Ben Cox all hitting respective centuries.
Surrey are fifth in the Division One table with 25 points after two rounds, while Leicestershire are eighth with 18.
