Mason Crane scored his maiden first-class century in Glamorgan's County Championship fixture against Surrey today (June 20), less than two months after he fell short of the milestone by just one run.
Crane came in at No.9 off the back of a century from Chris Cooke, which had rescued Glamorgan's innings from a collapse. The home side had slipped to 79-6, with Colin Ingram having retired hurt, to bring Crane to the crease at No.9. Together, they put on a 165-run unbeaten stand by the close of play on day one, with Cooke not out on 101 and Crane on 59* overnight.
However, Cooke only survived three balls of Gus Atkinson's opening over on day two before he was bowled, which brought Ingram back out to the middle. He and Crane put on another big stand, which saw Crane reach his three-figure milestone. On 99*, he pushed a ball from Dan Lawrence into the offside from a two, and raised his fist in the air as he ran through.
Crane's century comes as part of a resurgence on several fronts for the leg-spinner. Having been absent from England colours since his single Test appearance in the final match of the 2017/18 Ashes, Crane has battled several injuries and moved from Hampshire to Glamorgan in the years since. He was included in the England Lions 50-over squad that faced South Africa A earlier this month, and played all three matches.
Crane scores century weeks after falling one run short
Earlier in the season, Crane was on the brink of scoring his maiden first-class century when he was on 99 against Leicestershire. He attempted a slog-sweep of Ajaz Patel and was stumped just short of the milestone.
Having reached the milestone this time around, Crane's dismissal triggered a collapse which saw Glamorgan bowled out for 358. After he was bowled by Lawrence for 106, the final two wickets of the innings fell within just eight runs.
