Surrey held their nerve against Yorkshire in the County Championship to register a one-wicket win and collect 19 crucial points, helping them stay clear of the relegation zone.

Surrey started their chase of 185 well with a 42-run opening stand from Rory Burns (20) and Dom Sibley (21). But Jack White first removed Sibley before dismissing nightwatcher Rahul Chahar on the last ball of the same over. George Hill sent back Burns soon after as Surrey lost three wickets in a span of 10 runs.

Ollie Pope, Adam Thomas, Ben Foakes and Tom Lawes scored a combined 37 as Surrey went from 75-3 to 115-7 quickly, still 70 runs shy of the target. This is where Josh Blake and Fisher stitched a crucial 55-run stand to take the team to 170 when the latter was dismissed for a well-made 33, leaving Surrey with 15 more needed and just two wickets in hand.

Auqib Nabi slammed a six but soon went down to Ben Coad trying to clear the ropes again, with the home side still needing two more runs. Daniel Worrall then smashed a delivery through the cover point region for four to win the game for Surrey.

Yorkshire batted first but stumbled in the opening exchanges, losing three wickets for one run within three overs. James Wharton (45) and Matthew Revis (40) then stitched an 89-run stand before the latter's dismissal. Tom Lawes picked up 4-36, while Worrall took three to keep Yorkshire down to 185.

However, Surrey could not get anywhere near Yorkshire’s first innings total, and were bundled out for a mere 83. Ollie Pope top-scored with 21, and Matthew Fisher got to 12. Coad and White struck three wickets each, while George Hill and Revis scalped two each, earning Yorkshire a lead of 102.

But the home side bounced bounced back at the Oval, bowling out Yorkshire for 82 to set themselves a target of 185. William Luxton top-scored with 29, while skipper Jonny Bairstow and Dom Bess managed 13 and 17, respectively. Fisher was the destructor-in-chief for Surrey, picking up a six-wicket haul in just nine overs. He ended with 6-25, his best figures in first-class cricket.

Surrey stood ninth in the points table with 105 points before the clash, and were at risk of dropping into the Division One relegation zone. But with 19 points from this nail-biting win (16 for a win, and three bonus), they now stand sixth with 124 points. Yorkshire accumulated three bonus points from the clash to go from 117 to 120 and sit eighth.

Surrey are scheduled to take on Sussex in the next round, while Yorkshire will lock horns with Essex.
