Quentin Sampson CPL 50

Guyana Amazon Warriors all-rounder Quentin Sampson scored his first T20 half-century in a successful CPL run-chase on Saturday (September 13).

Batting first after winning the toss, St Lucia Kings put up 185-4 on the board, led by Ackeem Auguste (50 off 30) and Roston Chase's (90 off 55)half-centuries. Dwaine Pretorius was the pick of the bowlers for Guyana, taking 2-36 off his four overs.

In a surprising move, Guyana sent out Quentin Sampson to open the batting in the run-chase. The 25-year-old all-rounder had batted at No.10 in the previous match for the Amazon Warriors, and had not batted higher than No.8 in any of his five CPL 2025 matches before this game. He had an immediate impact, hitting the first ball he faced for a boundary.

By the end of the powerplay, Sampson had powered Guyana to 51-1, scoring 32 off 21 himself. His first maximum came off Delano Potgieter in the seventh over, before he smashed Keon Gaston for two consecutive sixes in the ninth over, reaching his fifty off 27 balls in the process.

After two more sixes, off Tabraiz Shamsi and Khary Pierre, Sampson was dismissed for 76 off 39, caught off the bowling of Chase in the 12th over. Guyana collapsed from 103-1 to 124-5, but the lower order ensured they went over the line, with Pretorius hitting a last-ball six to seal the match and ensure playoffs qualification. Sampson was awarded player of the match.

      Who is Quentin Sampson?

Sampson has an interesting background. He's an active member of the Guyana Police Force, having the designation of a rural police seargent. Sampson recently participated in the 2025 West Indies Breakout League. Playing for Guyana Rainforest Rangers, he made 89 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 161.82.

Sampson's early cricketing experience has come in tape-ball cricket; last month, he won a second consecutive MVP award in the Kares T10 tournament in Guyana.

Also a promising right-arm seamer, Sampson was suspended from bowling in the Breakout League after his action was found to be illegal. Consequently, he hasn't bowled in CPL 2025 - his first professional T20 tournament - so far.

Sampson has also played two List A matches, both of which came in 2023 for Guyana. On his debut, he made 13 (10) while batting at No.7 and a duck in his second game, batting at No.8.
