Not only was this Gill's third lost toss in a row, but also India's 13th in a row across formats – a sequence that has a 1 in 8,192 chance of taking place, and is now a world record in men's international cricket. The last toss won by an Indian captain in men's international cricket was on January 28, 2025 in a T20I against England, when Suryakumar Yadav won and chose to field first at Rajkot.

This run of 13 toss losses involves three captains; Gill, Surya and Rohit Sharma in the Test, T20I and ODI formats respectively. Rohit was skipper for the ODI series against England, as well as the Champions Trophy which India won earlier this year. In the ODI format alone, India have lost their last 15 tosses, another world record.

The previous world record for most consecutive losses in men's international cricket was held by West Indies, who lost 12 in a row between February and April 1999.
