Stuart Broad criticised Ravindra Jadeja's approach with the bat during day four of the second Test between India and England.

India entered the day with a 244-run lead, and nine wickets in hand as KL Rahul and Karun Nair resumed their innings. Both players were dismissed before lunch, but Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill ensured the lead had risen to 357 by the interval.

Pant was eventually dismissed in bizarre fashion as his bat flew to square leg, and the ball to long-off for a catch – bringing Ravindra Jadeja to the crease, one spot up from his usual No.7.

Gill and Jadeja saw India through to tea, with the India skipper scoring his second century of the match, and becoming just the third player to score 250-plus and 100-plus in the same Test.

However, former England bowler Stuart Broad was less than impressed by Jadeja's approach with the bat, as India motored on towards a declaration that appears inevitable.

Broad: England will be loving it, exactly what they want

“Well, I can't understand this at all, from Jadeja and I don't think [England captain] Ben Stokes can either,” Broad said on commentary during the 65th over of the innings. “Have a look at this off-side field particularly, mid-on and mid-off are in; everyone up on the off-side. 461 lead, you would normally expect boundary riders.

“Jadeja's almost playing like India are behind the game here. He should be pushing this scoreboard on, grabbing all the energy out of England.

“12 off 38 in this situation, 42 overs left in the day, India 461 lead, 1-0 down in the series. This is a must-win game. England will be loving it, really, exactly what England want – runs not being added, overs coming out of the game, time coming out of the game.”

By tea, the fifth-wicket partnership between Gill and Jadeja stood at 68 off 130 balls. Gill had taken up the aggressor's role, scoring 42 of those runs at a strike rate of 67.7. Jadeja, meanwhile, was on 25 off 68, striking at under 40 and content to dead-bat Shoaib Bashir's over.
