Spectators wait for the rain to stop, and play to start, on day five of the first Ashes cricket Test match between England and Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham, central England on June 20, 2023

Day four of the ongoing second Test in India's five-match series against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, could face rain interruptions. Here is what the various weather forecasts say.

After Shubman Gill’s record 269 off 387 balls dominated most of the first two days, helping India post 587 in the first innings, England reached stumps on day two at 77-3. They suffered early setbacks on day three, losing Joe Root (22) and Ben Stokes (0) off successive balls. From there, Jamie Smith launched a counter-attack, reaching his century before lunch.

His 80-ball hundred is also the joint-third-fastest by an Englishman. Smith’s 207-ball 184 not out was so dominant that even Harry Brook’s 158 off 234 balls looked pale in comparison. Despite the fightback, England collapsed late, losing their last five wickets for just 20 runs, with Mohammed Siraj claiming figures of 6-70.

India, cushioned by a first-innings lead of 180, added another 64 runs in 13 overs on day three, losing only Yashasvi Jaiswal (28). Going into the penultimate day, however, rain could play spoilsport.
