India's last two Test series have been less than ideal – first being whitewashed at home by New Zealand before enduring a difficult tour of Australia in which they were beaten 3-1, the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah alone keeping them in the contest for extended periods of time.

India now have to deal with the retirements of three key players in R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Much of the speculation ahead of the series has been around who will take over from Rohit as Test skipper. Shubman Gill appears the prime candidate, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah very much in the frame.
There are also likely to be several new faces. Apart from the absences of Ashwin, Rohit and Kohli, reports have suggested that Mohammed Shami appears unlikely to be picked, given his recent injury issues. B Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair and Abhimanyu Easwaran are squad options among batters, while the likes of Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed will be eager to prove themselves with the 'A' team before the main series kicks off. Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur are a couple of more experienced players who will be eyeing a comeback.
