James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar during a Test match

A new trophy for the upcoming Test series between England and India will be called the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, named after the two legendary now-retired internationals.

The series in England has previously been played for the Pataudi Trophy, named after Nawab of Pataudi who played for England and India in the mid 20th century, as well as his son of the same name, who captained India in the 1960s and 70s. England end that trophy's tenure as the holders, having retained it in the 2-2 draw played out over 2021 and 2022.

Pataudi Trophy renamed after James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar

The new trophy, named after James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar, will be unveiled before the start of the five-match series on June 20. Anderson retired from Test cricket last summer but still features for Lancashire and has remained around the side as a bowling consultant. He is England's leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, and took 149 wickets against India during his career. 105 of them came in England, the most of anyone in history against the side.

Tendulkar remains as the leading run-scorer in the Test format's history, having scored 1,575 of his runs in England, including four centuries. The pair came up against each other in 14 Tests during their careers, with Anderson dismissing Tendulkar nine times – more than any other bowler managed against the India legend.

Test series played between India and England are contested for the Anthony de Mello Trophy, named after former Indian cricket administrator. India are the holders of that trophy, having won the previous series last year 4-1.

England announced their squad for the five match series today (June 5), with Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse back in, and a recall for bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton. The series will conclude at The Oval, with the final Test beginning on July 31.
