The last time the two teams met in Test cricket was in January–March last year, when England toured India for a five-match series. England lost the series 1–4. The upcoming matches will also mark the start of the 2023–25 World Test Championship campaign for both sides.
India toured England for a Test series in 2021, taking a 2–1 lead before COVID-19 forced a postponement. When they returned, England fought back to level the series 2–2.

England have named their playing XI, with Ollie Pope set to bat at No. 3, meaning Jacob Bethell misses out. Two pacers – Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse – return from injury and have been included in the side
India will begin a new era under newly appointed captain Shubman Gill, who is set to bat at No. 4, a position left vacant by the retired Virat Kohli. With Rohit Sharma also having hung up his boots, KL Rahul opens alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Karun Nair plays at six, Sai Sudharsan gets a debut at No.3, while Shardul Thakur gets the nod as the pace-bowling all-rounder.
