The first Test between England and India ended with another big chase by the hosts at Leeds. Here’s how the game affected the 2025-27 World Test Championship points table.
The five-match series began with a fine hundred by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is en route to becoming one of the fastest batters to score 2,000 runs in Test cricket. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant also contributed with hundreds, as India scored 471 in the first innings.
In reply, England got close, conceding a slender six-run lead to India, after Ollie Pope made 106 and Harry Brook fell just short of three figures, falling on 99. India were 92-3 in their second innings, but a mature stand between KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) helped India get near 300. Pant, who became just the second wicketkeeper with twin hundreds in the same Test, was dismissed in the 72nd over when India were 287-4. India ended up folding up for 364, losing the last seven wickets for 77 runs.
England were set a target of 371, but a listless bowling performance from India and an inspired batting show from openers Zak Crawley (65) and Ben Duckett (149) laid a foundation. England ended up winning by five wickets with 14 overs to spare, registering their second-highest successful chase in the format. They had earlier chased down 378 against India at Edgbaston in 2022.
It was the first time that a team lost a Test after five batters scored hundreds in the same game.
The second Test will begin on July 2 at Birmingham.
