Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, does not feature in the ICC men’s ODI bowling rankings despite being named in India’s squad for the upcoming series against England. Here’s why.
The India fast bowler has been one of the standout performers across formats since making his international debut in 2016. In 236 international matches, he has claimed 234 Test wickets at an average of 19.79, 149 ODI wickets at 23.55, and 121 T20I wickets at an average of 18.08, while maintaining an economy rate of 6.51.
His performances have also been reflected in the ICC rankings. Bumrah has held the No.1 spot in the Test bowling rankings since November 2024, a few months after becoming the first Indian fast bowler to reach the summit. He is currently ranked No.5 in the T20I bowling rankings, but does not have an official ODI ranking.
Why does Jasprit Bumrah not have an ODI ranking?
According to the ICC rankings criteria, players must have featured in international matches within a specified period to remain eligible. For Test cricket, a player must have made an appearance within the previous 12 to 15 months, while for white-ball cricket, they must have played an international match in the last nine to 12 months.
With India carefully managing Bumrah's workload, the fast bowler has largely been reserved for major tournaments and key Test series. As a result, he has not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup final, which was more than two and a half years ago, despite featuring regularly in the two T20 World Cups during that period.
He has also been rested for several bilateral white-ball series, with India taking a cautious approach given his history of back injuries. Consequently, he no longer meets the ICC's eligibility criteria to feature in the ODI bowling rankings.
However, he will earn a ranking as soon as he plays an ODI match.
