Overall, the record between the two sides in the format has been neck and neck ever since their first clash in 1992. England have won 30 matches, while South Africa have won 35, with five no-results and a tie.
South Africa are coming off a 2-1 ODI series win in Australia, while England last played an ODI in June, clean-sweeping West Indies 3-0 in what was Harry Brook’s first ODI series as full-time white-ball captain.

Latest ICC men's ODI team rankings ahead of England v South Africa
India currently top the ICC men's ODI team rankings with a rating of 124, followed by New Zealand (109) and Australia (106). South Africa enter the series as the sixth-placed side with a rating of 98, while England are eighth with 88.
The hosts will be looking to lift themselves further away from No. 9 – the last automatic qualification spot for the 2027 World Cup presently – a place currently occupied by the West Indies. Teams below them, like 10th-ranked Bangladesh and 12th-ranked Ireland, risk missing out on direct qualification. Eleventh-ranked Zimbabwe are assured a place along with sixth-placed South Africa, for being the hosts.
