West Indies batter Keacy Carty scored his third ODI century in 10 days in the second ODI between England and West Indies at Cardiff – after 33 innings, his career start in the format ranks alongside the very best.
Having scored two centuries in West Indies' previous series against Ireland, Carty was out for 22 in the first ODI against England. However, in second match of the series in Cardiff today (June 1), he scored a memorable hundred, reaching 103 off 105 balls before he was stumped by Jos Buttler. The century was Carty's fourth in the format, having scored his maiden hundred in West Indies' home series against England late last year.
Who has the most ODI runs after first 33 innings?
Carty has now played 33 ODI innings, with 1,403 runs at an average of 50.10. The number of runs he's scored puts him 14th on the all-time list of runs scored in men's ODIs across a player's first 33 innings in the format. Top on that list is Shubman Gill, who scored 1,739 runs in his first 33 ODI innings.
However, on the same list for only West Indies' batters, Carty's innings against England in Cardiff put him clear at the top. He surpassed the great Viv Richards' record of 1,399 runs in his first 33 ODI innings. One place lower on that list is Gordon Greenidge, who had scored 1,397 runs at the same point in his ODI career.
Only Shimron Hetmyer has scored more centuries for West Indies in that same number of innings, however Babar Azam holds the overall record on that front with seven.
Carty's strike rate of 82.72 is the fifth-worst among the top 15 run-scorers in the first 33 men's ODI innings. Imam-ul-Haq (80.05), Jonathan Trott (77.54), Ibrahim Zadran (80.58) and Yaseer Hameed (69.84) are the only ones to have lower strike rates than Carty.
Carty is also leading the way among batters who made their ODI debuts in 2020 and beyond. New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, who made his ODI debut in 2021, accumulated 1,400 runs from his first 33 ODI innings – three less than Carty – while Devon Conway, Harry Tector and Will Young are also in the 1,300s on that list.
