West Indies' Realeanna Grimmond was run out in extraordinary fashion against England on Wednesday (May 21).
In the first of three T20Is between the sides in Canterbury, West Indies were put in to bat by Nat Sciver-Brunt, in her first game as England's new permanent skipper.
Opening bowler Lauren Bell struck twice in the powerplay to vindicate her captain's decision, getting rid of Qiana Joseph and Zaida James for two & zero respectively. Those strikes brought 20-year-old Realeanna Grimmond to the crease in the fourth over, on T20I debut.
West Indies' Realeanna Grimmond run out in bizarre fashion
Grimmond and skipper Hayley Matthews put on 30 runs for the third wicket, although only four of those came from Grimmond's bat. In the eighth over, she was called through for a single by Matthews who had hit the ball down the ground in the direction of mid-on.
Hesitant at first, Grimmond eventually got through to the striker's end safely – or so it seemed. She made her ground while the throw from Sciver-Brunt was still on its way, tapping her bat inside the popping crease. However, in somewhat bizarre fashion, Grimmond immediately walked out of the crease. The ball arrived in wicketkeeper Amy Jones's gloves, and she promptly whipped off the bails to run Grimmond out.
Hayley Matthews: Just a bit of miscommunication
Matthews appeared in disbelief at the other end, before appearing to deliver a few words of consolation to Grimmond. Asked about the dismissal post-match, the West Indies captain said, “I saw the ball go to the keeper’s end and I was actually shouting, ‘Keeper’s end, stay in your crease.’
“I think, when I spoke to her afterwards she was telling me she probably thought I was saying, ‘Look for two’ or something like that somehow.
“So yeah, I think probably just a bit of miscommunication and lack of awareness somewhat, but once again, on debut, such a young girl, never playing at this level before so mistakes are going to be made but I’m sure she’ll learn from it and probably (hopefully) not get run out like that again.”
The dismissal made Grimmond just the fourth woman from the West Indies to be run out on T20I debut, and the first in over 12 years. It left West Indies 47-3, and they eventually scraped together 146-7, courtesy almost entirely of Matthews, who slammed an unbeaten 100 off 67 balls. The next highest score in the innings was Mandy Mangru's 17 from No.8.
England knocked off the required runs with minimum fuss, completing the chase in 16.3 overs thanks to a 104-run stand between opener Sophia Dunkley (81*) and Heather Knight (43*).
