Ireland posted the second-highest total ever in T20 World Cup history during their massive 96-run win over Oman on Saturday, February 14.

Ireland score second-highest T20 World Cup total

Batting first, Ireland didn’t start strongly, losing opener Tim Tector in the first over, and were 47-3 at the end of the powerplay. Captain Lorcan Tucker was batting at run-a-ball 12 while Curtis Campher had played just one delivery for a run.

Campher soon departed, but Tucker, along with Gareth Delany, steadied the Irish ship, taking them past 100 in the 12th over. The Ireland skipper then hit three boundaries over the next two overs to complete his fifty off 35 deliveries, while Delaney upped the ante, going from 24 off 17 to hit a 28-ball fifty.

As he was dismissed for a crucial 56 off 30, Tucker took over, going from 60 to 91 in just eight deliveries. He eventually couldn’t complete his hundred, which would have been the first for Ireland in T20 World Cups. George Dockrell finished the proceedings with three sixes to take the side to 235-5, 86 of which came in just the last four overs.

Ireland’s 235 is the second-highest total ever in the T20 World Cup, with Sri Lanka’s 260-6 against Kenya in the inaugural edition still sitting atop the list. England’s successful chase of 230 against South Africa in Mumbai in 2016 is now the third-highest.

Oman were never really in the chase against Ireland, folding for 139 in 18 overs. Aamir Kaleem was the top scorer for them with a 29-ball 50, which made him the oldest player to score a half-century in T20 World Cups.
