The ICC have confirmed 12 of the 20 participant teams at the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup.
Twelve teams named, eight remain
With their win against Namibia, Pakistan became the eighth team to qualify for the Super Eights of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. All these teams also qualified directly for the 2028 edition, to be played in Australia and New Zealand.
As co-hosts, Australia and New Zealand automatically qualified for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup. That takes the number of qualified teams to nine (New Zealand are also part of the Super Eights).
“The next three highest-ranked teams” as per the ICC men’s T20I team rankings as on March 9, 2026 (the day after the World Cup final) will also qualify directly for the 2028 edition. “Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland are set to secure those places, with no upcoming international fixtures scheduled that could alter their rankings before the cut-off date,” confirmed the ICC in a release on Wednesday (February 18).
This means that the 12 Full Members will also be the ones qualifying directly for the next World Cup. The other eight slots will be filled by teams through regional qualifications “with allocations based on the relative competitive strength of each region”.
It is worth a mention that since South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified, two African Associate Nations will make it to the next edition. On the other hand, only one team will qualify from the entire Americas zone, provided the number of regional qualifying spots remains the same as this year.
