Italy captain Wayne Madsen has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026 match against Scotland – and perhaps for longer.
A historic day for Italy
At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, captain Madsen won the toss and elected to field against Scotland, thus marking Italy’s debut in a cricket World Cup in any format. Madsen himself had World Cup experience, in 2006 – at field hockey for South Africa.
Italy had put Madsen in charge when they not only sacked but dropped captain Joe Burns from their side. Burns had led them in the Europe Qualifier, from where Italy had made it along with the Netherlands.
Scotland, who had initially failed to make the cut, qualified once Bangladesh opted out of the tournament.
Wayne Madsen ruled out of opening game, perhaps more
Scotland were 19-0 in three overs when Thomas Draca (who had signed up for the 2025 IPL mega-auction) came to bowl the fourth. George Munsey played out the first ball, which was followed by a wide outside the off-stump.
Draca’s next ball was short-pitched and outside off, and Munsey cross-batted it to the mid-wicket fence. Madsen gave it a valiant chase and when he eventually dived, he landed on a practice pitch. The physiotherapist arrived and, after some attention, Madsen walked off the ground in visible agony, resting his dislocated shoulder in a makeshift sling.
Some time later, Ian Bishop informed on air that Madsen had definitely been ruled out of at least the rest of the match.
Scotland finished on 207-4, the highest total by any Associate Nation at the Men’s T20 World Cup. Munsey top-scored with a 54-ball 84, while Brandon McMullen (41 not out in 18 balls) and Michael Leask (22 not out in five) provided the finishing touches.
