The BCCI were criticised for the video they released on their social media platforms after India won the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.
At Ahmedabad on March 8, India beat New Zealand in the final to become the first host nation to win the Men’s T20 World Cup. They also became the first team to win the trophy thrice as well as the first to defend their title.
Jay Shah, who used to be the secretary of the BCCI until he was elected unopposed as the ICC chair in August 2024, handed the medals to the winning squad and the trophy to Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. He then joined the victorious Indian team in their celebrations.
On March 10, the BCCI uploaded a 37-second montage, celebrating the Indian squad and Shah. Social media users were quick to point out that Shah appeared 12 times in the video.
The video drew criticism from international sporting media. On The Final Word podcast, Adam Collins referred to the situation as the “boiling frog thing”.
He added: “This is not normal to have the guy who is responsible for the biggest decisions in global cricket on behalf of all the members celebrating like he’s in his old job ... in his previous position, would be normal, that would be fine, that wouldn’t be remarked upon. I actually feel sorry for the players.”
Geoff Lemon added: “If you’re heading a national board, you shouldn’t be celebrating like you’re a punter in the stands. There is still a difference between those things.”
Other journalists were sarcastic in their criticism of the video as well.
