Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha chose to bat after winning the toss. After Saim Ayub and Agha were dismissed in the Powerplay, Sahibzada Farhan and Babar Azam steadied the innings, before Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan gave Pakistan some impetus in the second half. Farhan top-scored with 63 to continue his fine form in the competition, and they finished on 164-9 on a Pallekele wicket that was not entirely straightforward to bat on.

Phil Salt was dismissed by Shaheen Shah Afridi off the first ball of England's chase, bringing captain Harry Brook to the crease in a surprise promotion. Even as wickets went down around him – England were reduced to 37-3 and 58-4 – he held the innings together superbly, making his way to a 50-ball century. By the time he was out, England needed just 10 off 18 balls, which they completed, but not without a couple of nervy moments beforehand.
The result has given England two wins out of two in the Super Eights stage, and also made them the first team to qualify for the semifinals.

England remain on top of group two, and have ensured a semifinal spot. Pakistan remain third in the group, and their chances of progression are no longer in their hands; they can get a maximum of three points now.
