Hampshire quick Manny Lumsden registered the best figures by an England pacer at the U19 World Cup during their win over New Zealand.
With England needing a win to book a semifinal spot, the 17-year-old Lumsden produced a record performance to register a five-wicket haul and help his side win by 65 runs. His spell of 5-17 was the best by an England pacer at the U19 World Cup and the second-best overall, followed by leg-spinner Tazeem Ali’s 7-29 against Zimbabwe in the 2024 edition.
England maintained their unbeaten record in the ongoing edition, beating the Kiwis comprehensively in their final Super Sixes game. Batting first, a half-century from Ben Mayes and solid contributions from Ben Dawkins (42) and Caleb Falconer (47) took them to a respectable 234-7. Off-spinner Farhan Ahmed, younger brother of Rehan Ahmed, chipped in with a handy 29.
New Zealand, in reply, had barely gotten back on track after losing opener Aryan Mann in just the second over when Lamsden struck. He broke a 32-run second-wicket stand between Hugo Bogue and Tom Jones, dismissing both in his first over of the game, to bring England firmly back in the game.
Though his second spell didn’t yield a wicket, the pressure he exerted bore fruit immediately after, with Alex Green getting the better of Snehith Reddy to break another potentially dangerous partnership. Lamsden then returned for a third spell and struck thrice in four balls of his first over back to skittle New Zealand out for 169. The win sealed a semifinal spot for England, where they will face either Australia or Afghanistan.
Glamorgan’s James Harris previously held the record for the best figures by an England pacer at the U19 World Cup. He had registered figures of 5-29 in a 13-run win over Bangladesh at the 2008 edition of the tournament. Reece Topley was second and is now third on the list with a 5-32, also against Bangladesh, in 2012.
