South Africa’s Tazmin Brits scored her fifth ODI ton in 2025 during the Women’s World Cup clash against New Zealand, a world record for the most tons scored by a woman in a year.
Brits created history by scoring her fifth century of the year during South Africa’s commanding win over New Zealand in Indore today (October 6). Chasing a target of 232, she opened the innings alongside Laura Wolvaardt. While Wolvaardt was dismissed in the third over, Brits, together with No.3 Sune Luus, built a strong partnership that helped erase the memories of their previous outing, when they had been bowled out for just 69 against England.
Brits eventually reached her seventh ODI hundred off 87 deliveries in the 31st over, five of which have been scored this year. It is a world record, as she moved past Smriti Mandhana, who has scored four hundreds twice, in 2024 and 2025. Brits was dismissed for 101 in the end, with her innings containing 15 fours and a six.
The 34-year-old has scored 1,525 runs in 41 matches at an average of 39.10, with two fifties to go with her seven hundreds. Brits also has the record for the most ODI hundreds by a woman after the age of 30 (7). This year, she has scored 749 runs in 11 games at an average of 83.22, including a high score of 171*, which came against Pakistan last month. Brits’ last five ODI scores are: 101, 101*, 171*, 5 and 101. She is also the fastest woman to the milestone of seven ODI hundreds in terms of innings played, beating Australia's Meg Lanning, who took 44 knocks to do so.
Tazmin Brits' extraordinary career
Given her age and how prolific she has been, it is striking that Brits has played just 41 ODIs. However, this isn't the tale of the hidden gem or the late bloomer, plugging away in domestic cricket before a late career surge, but something more remarkable. As a junior, cricket wasn't Brits' focus, because of her talent in athletics. She won a gold medal for javelin in the Junior World Championships, and was on track to compete at the 2012 Olympics in London before a car accident effectively curtailed her athletics career. She later switched to pursuing cricket, and has now established herself as one of the world's most in-form batters.
