South Africa beat Pakistan by 150 runs in a rain-hit match at Colombo on October 21. Here is the 2025 Women’s World Cup points table after the match.
South Africa reach top of table, Pakistan eliminated
Yet again, a 2025 World Cup match at Colombo was marred by rain, but this time there was just about enough cricket for South Africa to win and jump to the top of the points table. The result also eliminated Pakistan.
Fatima Sana (1-69) struck early after she won the toss and opted to field at Colombo, but play was stopped with South Africa on 6-1 after two overs. When play resumed, South Africa seemed determined to overcome their negative net run rate. Laura Wolvaardt herself led the charge with an 82-ball 90, while Sune Luus hit 61 in 59 balls after the game had been reduced to a 40-over contest.
The pair put on 123 before Marizanne Kapp (68 not out in 43 balls) and Nadine de Klerk (41 in 16) tore into the Pakistan attack. South Africa finished on 312-9 in 40 overs. For Pakistan, Sadia Iqbal returned 3-63 and Nashra Sandhu 3-45. Pakistan’s target was adjusted to 306.
Somewhat surprisingly, despite threats of rain looming, South Africa did not use their spinners to open bowling. Kapp (3-20) and Ayabonga Khaka (1-14) got early wickets, but rain came at 35-4 after 10 overs. There were several instances when the covers came off, only to be put back on when the rain resumed.
The last resumption, with Pakistan on 48-4 after 12 overs was also scheduled to be the final one, for Pakistan were allowed to bat 20 overs (the target was readjusted to 234), the minimum needed for a full game. Nondumiso Shangase (2-19) struck in this period, and South Africa managed to secure the win. Pakistan eventually finished on 83-7.
