Laura Wolvaardt of South Africa celebrates with team mate Tazmin Brits following victory in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup India 2025 match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium on October 17, 2025 in Colombo, Sri Lanka

South Africa thrashed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the women’s ODI World Cup on Friday (October 17). Here's how the points table stacks up.

A prolonged rain interruption after Sri Lanka elected to bat first resulted in the match being reduced to a 20-over affair. South Africa restricted Sri Lanka in the early stages of the innings, and they were 46-2 when the rain came at the end of the 12 over. Five hours later when the players were able to get back on, Kavisha Dilhari hit the first ball back for six An eventful last over of the innings bowled by Nonkululeko Mlaba saw three wickets in four balls, with one – the dismissal of Anushka Sanjeewani – ending in a run out. Mlaba finished with impressive figures of 3-30. Vishmi Gunaratne (34) top-scored for Sri Lanka. The DLS adjusted target for South Africa was 121.

Tazmin Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt took South Africa home with an unbeaten 125-run stand. It is now South Africa’s second-highest opening stand in Women’s ODI World Cups, just behind the record of 128 by Lizelle Lee and Wolvaardt against England in 2017.

With that win, South Africa exchanged places with England, climbing to the second spot while the latter slipped to third. They have now won the same number of matches (4) as table-toppers Australia, who have already qualified for the semi-finals. Australia, however, have nine points compared to South Africa’s eight because of a washout against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, succumbed to their third loss in five matches and remain at seventh on the points table just ahead of bottom-placed Pakistan.
