Smriti Mandhana has become the second India batter to reach 800 rating points in the ICC women’s ODI rankings.
Smriti Mandhana in the midst of a sensational run
The Indian vice-captain has been in sensational form of late, which has seen her rack up 928 runs this year in 14 innings at an average of 66.28. She is 43 runs short of becoming the highest run-scorer in a calendar year, already becoming the second to cross 900 runs in one year. Her four hundreds are also the joint-most made in a calendar year in women’s ODIs, the most recent of which was a 50-ball ton in New Delhi.
Chasing Australia’s massive total of 412, Mandhana ensured India got off to a flier. She reached her 13th hundred in 50 balls - the second-fastest in the format, and the fastest ever by an Indian - male or female. India eventually fell 43 runs short of the target, but not before they notched up the highest second innings total in women’s ODI cricket.
Mandhana’s form has continued from 2024. Last year, she scored 747 runs in 13 innings at 57.46, along with four hundreds and three fifties. Since January 2024, she has scored 1,675 runs, the most in the format. Only two others have crossed 1,000 runs in this period: Laura Wolvaardt (1,045 runs) and Hayley Matthews (1,003). No other woman has scored more than five hundreds in this period; Mandhana has eight. It helped her win the Wisden’s Leading Cricketer of the Year for 2024.
Mandhana joins elusive 800-point club
The left-hander, who ended the three-match series against Australia with scores of 58, 117 and 125, strengthened her position at the top of the ICC women’s ODI batting rankings. She also improved her rating points to a career-best of 818, making her one of 14 batters to reach the 800-mark in women’s ODIs.
She has now pushed herself to No.11 on the all-time list, which is led by Karen Rolton, who achieved 901 rating points in 2004. Mandhana is also the second Indian in the 800-point club, after Mithali Raj, who had a career-best of 880 points.
