Rohit Sharma has become the ICC's No.1-ranked ODI batter for the first time in his career.
18 years and 11,370 runs: Rohit Sharma finally reaches No.1
One of the greats of ODI cricket, the 39-year-old Rohit recorded scores of eight, 73 and 121* in the recently-concluded ODI series against Australia, which took him to ninth place on the all-time run scoring charts for the format. He has also been rewarded with a two-spot jump in the ICC player rankings, from No.3 to No.1.
Surprisingly, this is the first time Rohit has ever been the No.1 ODI batter in the world. It comes more than 18 years after he first played an ODI, against Ireland in Belfast in 2007. Rohit did not bat in that game.
While his current rating of 781 points is enough to earn him top spot now, it is quite a way off from his peak rating. In fact, between September 2018 and February 2022, Rohit's rating never fell below 800. When he reached his peak rating of 882 in July 2019, he was No.2 in the world, with teammate Virat Kohli at the top (889).
Kohli, meanwhile, has now slipped out of the top five after scoring back-to-back ducks and an unbeaten 74 in the Australia ODIs. England skipper Harry Brook's superb lone-effort ton against New Zealand earned him a 23-spot rise to 25th in the world.
In the ODI bowling rankings, New Zealand's Mitchell Santner broke into the top five, and USA quick Saurabh Netravalkar gained two spots to sit in 20th. Axar Patel rose four spots to eighth, in the all-rounder rankings.
