Deepesh Devendran, a 17-year-old seamer, picked up 5-45 as Australia U19 were bundled out for 243 in the first Youth Test against India U19 at Brisbane.
Playing his second Under-19 Test, Deepesh, bowling one change in Australia’s first innings, made an immediate mark, dismissing opener Alex Turner for nine. The next three wickets were shared between Kishan Kumar, Anmoljeet Singh and Khilan Patel, but it was a Deepesh show thereafter, as he picked up four more wickets to fall. The highlight was his dismissal of No.3 Steven Hogan, who top-scored with a patient 92 off 246 balls, fighting a lone battle in an innings where only one other batter scored 25. Deepesh bowled a shorter delivery that bounced awkwardly, and Hogan could only manage a tentative nick.
Kishan picked up 3-48, as Australia slumped to 243 at stumps on day one.
Who is Deepesh Devendran?
The Tamil Nadu pacer, who clocks above 130kmph, is the son of V Devendran, who played in the inaugural Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (then Inter State T20), India's premier domestic T20 tournament. He was the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament, making 285 runs at 31.66, leading his team to victory. After joining the now-defunct Indian Cricket League, he started coaching his son.
Deepesh, who was a standby for the Under-19 Asia Cup last year, finally received his India call-up for the England tour. He picked up 3-33 in the tour match ahead of the series, and then claimed three wickets across the next three Youth ODIs. Deepesh’s Under-19 Test debut was also on the tour, but he was not able to impress, finishing with 2-150 in the game. However, his speeds stood out, even touching 132.32 kmph in the one-dayers.
He also played the third Youth ODI against Australia on the ongoing tour, but went wicketless.
He was also picked in the TNCA XI squad for the Buchi Babu tournament.
