India U19 captain Ayush Mhatre's poor form in the Australia tour continued as he was dismissed for four runs in the first innings of the second Youth Test in Mackay on Tuesday (October 7).
Australia U19 bowled out cheaply
Batting first at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, the home side lost their opener Simon Budge in the first over of the match, before collapsing to 32-5 inside the first 10 overs.
Henil Patel and Udhav Mohan - India's opening bowlers - were the destroyers-in-chief. A 59-run sixth-wicket partnership between Yash Deshmukh and Alex Lee Young helped Australia U19 recover to 91-6, but they could only manage a total of 135. Patel finished with figures of 3-21, while Mohan took 2-23. Left-arm spinner Khilan Patel also picked up three wickets for 23 runs.
Ayush Matre, Vaibhav Suryavanshi fail
India U19 switched up their batting order slightly. Teenage prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi was pushed down to No.3, with Vihaan Malhotra taking his spot as an opener. The move didn't work. Malhotra was out for 11 in the fourth over. Two balls later, Mhatre departed as well, having made only four runs off five balls.
Suryavanshi smashed two fours and a six in his short stay, making 20 off 14 before he too was dismissed. At the time of writing, India U19 were 76-3 in 14 overs with Vedant Trivedi and Rahul Kumar at the crease.

Mhatre's poor form continues
This Australia tour has been a tough one for the India U19 captain. He made three single-digit scores in the three Youth ODIs preceding the four-day games. In the first Youth Test, Mhatre got a start, but couldn't go beyond 21, and now, he has begun the second Youth Test with a knock of just four runs, making it his fourth single-digit score in five innings on the tour.
Before this, he had also led India U19 during their tour of England in June-July this year. The one-day leg of that series was a similarly poor one for Mhatre, where he recorded three single-digit scores and one innings of 21 in four outings. However, he piled on a mountain of runs in the two Youth Tests. In the first game, Mhatre made 102 and 32, followed by 80 and 126 in the second.
His overall Youth ODI average stands at a dismal 9.20 from 10 matches, in sharp contrast to his Youth Test average of 60.83 from four games.
