14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke the record for the most sixes in Youth ODIs during the second match of the ongoing series between India Under-19 and Australia Under-19 in Brisbane on Wednesday (September 24).
India U19 take 2-0 lead over Australia U19
After being asked to bat first, India U19 lost captain Ayush Mhatre for a duck on just the second ball of the innings. After the early dismissal, Mhatre’s opening partner, Suryavanshi, took a watchful approach, scoring nine off his first 29 deliveries – in contrast to his usual free-flowing nature. He broke the shackles by hitting seamer John James for a four and a six off consecutive deliveries. He kicked on after those two boundaries, bringing up a half-century on his 54th ball with a six off pacer Kasey Barton. Suryavanshi ended up scoring 70 off 68 balls, hitting five fours and six sixes in total.
With No. 3 Vihaan Malhotra, he stitched a 117-run stand, with the latter also scoring 70, off 74 balls. Fresh from a match-winning batting performance in the previous match, keeper Abhigyan Kundu then added 71 off 64, with India U19 reaching 300 before being bowled out with two balls left in the innings. Will Byrom (3-47) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia U19.
In response, Australia U19, trailing the three-match series 0-1, were bowled out for 249. Mhatre ended up taking three wickets with his part-time spin, finishing with 3-27 in four overs.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi breaks Youth ODI world record
With that innings, Suryavanshi broke the record for hitting the most sixes in Youth ODIs. His tally now stands at 41 from 10 innings. The previous record-holder, Unmukt Chand, took more than double the number of innings (21) as Suryavanshi to hit 38 sixes. Since his U19 ODI debut in late November last year, Suryavanshi is one of only five batters to score more than 500 runs and is the only one to average over fifty (54.00). In July, he became both the youngest and the fastest centurion in Youth ODIs with a 52-ball ton against England Under-19. He also holds the record for the second-fastest century in IPL, off 35 balls.
