Singh opened with Shikhar Dhawan for PBKS and stood firm after his captain was dismissed in the second over of the innings. He scored his first boundary off Khaleel Ahmed and made it two in three balls in the same over.
Wickets continued to fall around the young batter, who is as yet uncapped at senior level for India. Liam Livingstone was dismissed by Ishant Sharma in the fourth over of the innings and Jitesh Sharma fell to Axar Patel in the fifth.
At the end of the powerplay, Punjab were struggling on 46-3 with Singh at this point accumulating on 21 off 20 balls. It took another four overs for Singh to score his next boundary. He played out four dots in that period of play, in which the Delhi spinners took control, and picked up six singles.
After the halfway stage when he was on 27 off 31 and Punjab were staring down the barrel of a low total at 66-3, Singh finally cut loose. He hit back-to-back sixes off Mitchell Marsh, carving both maximums over the boundary down the ground. Now in his groove, he brought up his fifty in Axar Patel’s final over. It was his second half-century in this year’s tournament, coming over a month after he hit 60 off 34 balls against Rajasthan Royals.
His next 50 runs came off just 19 balls as he accelerated towards the end of the innings. He dispatched Kuldeep Yadav into the stands before giving Shubman Dube the same treatment.
In the 18th over, he brought up his century with consecutive fours off Kuldeep again. Opening the face of his bat, he guided a low full toss past backward point and took off his helmet to acknowledge the crowd.
Although he was dismissed four balls later for 103, his innings was the sole substantial contributor to PBKS’ final total of 167-7. Sam Curran was the next highest scorer with 20.
Punjab Kings went on to secure a comfortable victory with the ball turning significantly in the second innings, highlighting the value and quality of Singh’s innings.
