Forgotten IPL players

The Indian Premier League has been a platform where several young players have left their mark, but a few have also come and faded quickly, without impressing.

A total of 70 cricketers have made IPL debuts in their teens. Here are a few who played but are now long forgotten.

Prayas Ray Barman

The record for the youngest IPL debutant belonged to Barman, who debuted at 16 years and 157 days, before Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke it this year. Ray Barman had been picked by RCB in IPL 2019 for INR 1.5 crore after leading the wicket charts in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He did not have a memorable start, conceding 56 in four overs. Recounting that game for Sportsboom, he said: "I understand the mistakes I made in that match now that I am a mature bowler. I lost the plot after the first six. I forgot my process. I was bowling to a guy who was hitting me for sixes. AB came up from deep mid-wicket and told me to calm down, and bowl like I did at the nets."

He has played only three domestic games for Bengal since 2022 and has returned to college for further education.

Jaskaran Singh

The right-hand pacer was a part of the IPL-winning Deccan Chargers in 2009, also representing the side in 2010. He played eight games over the two seasons, picking up six scalps, with his wickets including the likes of Michael Hussey, Brad Hodge and Kieron Pollard. Rising Pune Supergiant got him for INR 10 lakh in the 2016 player auction but did not play that year. He has now qualified to play for Canada and made his T20I debut this year. From five T20Is, he has picked up nine wickets and scored 68 runs so far.

Sarvesh Kumar

Sarvesh made his T20 debut while playing for Deccan Chargers against Delhi Daredevils in May 2008. The medium pacer conceded 24 runs in three overs and returned 1-18 off two in the next game, against CSK. Those were the only two T20s he played in his career, over which he played a total of 11 domestic games across formats. He last played professionally in 2014.

Taruwar Kohli

Taruwar first burst onto the scene in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, scoring 218 runs with three successive fifties to help India win the title. He went on to have an impressive domestic career, scoring 4,573 first-class runs in 55 games at an average of 53.80 with two triple tons. He played 72 List A matches and 57 T20s as well, but did not convert his form into the IPL circuit. He played for Rajasthan in the first season and moved to Punjab the following year. Overall, he played four IPL games, making 11 runs with a high score of 7. The former Punjab player moved to Mizoram in 2018 and last played professionally in 2023. He is now a cricket content creator.

Harpreet Singh Bhatia

Harpreet had a sensational start to his career, making 709 runs in seven games in the 2008/09 Cooch Behar Trophy. The former vice-captain of the under-19 team, Harpreet first earned an IPL call-up in 2009, where he played for KKR. He moved to Pune Warriors India in 2011 and 2012, but his next IPL appearance came 11 seasons later – owing to a bizarre confusion – when he represented Punjab Kings. He turned out in two games last season, making 27 runs and continues to represent Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket. Harpreet also holds the record for being the highest run-scorer in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy history.

Vijay Zol

Zol held the record for being the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket before Suryavanshi got there at only 14. The left-hander was picked up by RCB in 2014 after impressing in age-group cricket. His first-class debut was for India A, where he scored a hundred. He also made a double ton on his Ranji debut. Zol was a member of the 2012 Under-19 World Cup and led the team in the next edition, following which he made his IPL debut. However, he could only make 29 runs in three games and never played in the league again. His last domestic match was in 2019.

Kamran Khan

Kamran had a breakthrough season in IPL 2009, being picked to play for Rajasthan Royals out of obscurity after being scouted by the team’s director of cricket. Aged 18 at the time, he had no first-class experience when he was given a contract worth US$ 24,000. He picked up six wickets that year in five games, but impressed with his speed, clocking 140 kmph consistently. The game against KKR brought him into prominence, where he finished with 3-18 in four overs, including defending seven in the last over to take the game into a Super Over. He was entrusted to bowl the tie-breaker, where he conceded 15 runs, which was chased down by RR. He moved to Pune in 2011, playing one game, also the last T20 game of his career. Last year, he made a comeback, appearing in the Pro Cricket League for Rajasthan Kings.
