Yuzvendra Chahal took his second IPL hat-trick, for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday (April 30). Here is every record he broke in the process.

After Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer chose to field first, CSK managed to put up 190 in their 20 overs, thanks in large part to No.3 Sam Curran's 88. They were bowled out four balls short of their 20 overs, with the last five wickets falling in the space of seven balls.

Four of those went to Yuzvendra Chahal, including three off the last three balls of the 19th over – he had Deepak Hooda caught at point, bowled Anshul Kamboj and had Noor Ahmad caught at long on.

It was his second IPL hat-trick, and earlier in the over Chahal had dismissed MS Dhoni, also making it the second time he had picked up four wickets in an over in the IPL.

Yuzvendra Chahal breaks records with second IPL hat-trick

Chahal is the first bowler to take four wickets in an over twice in the IPL. Amit Mishra (2013) and Andre Russell (2022) have done it once each. This is also the first hat-trick of IPL 2025.

This is the first-ever IPL hat-trick against Chennai Super Kings. Incidentally, the first IPL hat-trick was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji for CSK, against Punjab in 2008. These two are the only IPL hat-tricks taken in Chennai.

Chahal has become the third player to record multiple hat-tricks in the IPL. Amit Mishra (3) and Yuvraj Singh (2) are the others.

He was already the highest wicket-taker in IPL history, but Chahal now holds the record for the most four-wicket hauls in the league, with nine. Sunil Narine (8) and Lasith Malinga (7) are now second and third respectively.

Sunil Narine (12) holds the record for most IPL wickets by a spinner in the 19th over of matches. Chahal has moved up to second on this list, with 10 to his name.

This is the fifth hat-trick for the IPL's Punjab franchise, but only the third to take place in India. Axar Patel (2016) and Sam Curran (2019) were the first two to do so, while both of Yuvraj Singh's hat-tricks came in the 2009 season in South Africa.

This is the ninth IPL hat-trick where all three victims were right-handed batters. Chahal is the second to take multiple hat-tricks of this kind. In his previous one, the victims were Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins. Interestingly, the first two of this kind in the IPL were taken by a Punjab player, Yuvraj Singh, and the third was against Punjab.

One record Chahal failed to manage was an all-Indian IPL hat-trick – only achieved by Lakshmipathy Balaji (Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, VRV Singh), Amit Mishra (D Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh), Amit Mishra (Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda) and Andrew Tye (Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Shardul Thakur).
