Punjab Kings pay tribute to victims of boat accident
Match 17 of the 2026 IPL saw hosts Punjab Kings win the toss and elect to field first at New Chandigarh. As they took the field, the Punjab players sported black armbands; the two Sunrisers Hyderabad openers did not.
"Punjab Kings players wore black armbands during today's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh on Saturday, as a mark of respect for those affected by the tragic boat accident in Vrindavan. The franchise stands in solidarity with the grieving families and the community during this difficult time," the franchise confirmed to Wisden.com. Shortly afterwards, an Instagram post from the team outlined the same.
The tragedy took place on Friday afternoon (April 10), when a boat capsized at the popular tourist spot of Vrindavan in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. The boat was carrying a group of 30 from Ludhiana, Punjab, and initial reports indicated that at least ten people had drowned. Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants (based in Uttar Pradesh) both posted condolence messages on social media.
